If you are new to running you are probably new to running shoes. Run into your local running store and you will be bombarded by a plethora of brands and styles of shoes. You may not realize how important it is to choose a shoe especially designed for running. No matter how stylish, basketball shoes, tennis shoes or cross trainers are not the shoes for jogging or running. Most athletic shoes are carefully designed to be sport specific. From the start it is very important to choose the right type of shoe for the sport. For runners that can get a little tricky because you will need to know your foot type.

Jogging or running for any period of time puts a lot of stress on the feet, ankles, knees, hips and spine. To avoid injury and protect your joints from the exponential forces of your weight with every foot strike during the gait cycle it is important to know your foot type and what type of running shoe accommodates your foot type. There are three basic types of feet. If your foot has a high or very high arch you are a supinator. The supinator foot will look like it is designed specifically for stilettos. This foot type is very stiff or inflexible. Next are the pronators. This foot has a very low arch or no arch at all. If you have this foot type you are flat-footed. The flat foot is the most prone to injury because this foot type does not support weight well during the gait cycle. The last foot type is the neutral foot. The average foot falls into this category. This foot type is characterized by the mid height arch.

How can you figure out your foot type? Well, it is actually very easy to determine. If you are having trouble determining your foot type by visual inspection, you can have your foot digitally scanned at a specialty running store or sport doctor's office. Even though the digital scanning method is more accurate, there is a very simple test that you can perform at home called the Wet Test. If done properly The Wet Test can be just as effective in determining your foot type.

The Wet Test


Get a few sheets of construction paper or brown paper bags large enough for you to stand on with both feet.
Simply lay down one of the sheets of construction paper or brown paper bags on a hard smooth surface that will hold your weight.
Fill your bathtub with enough warm water to immerse your feet.
Dip your feet into the water.
Let the excess water drip off by gently shaking your feet.
Do not dry your feet or step onto a rug.
Step onto the construction paper with both damp feet side by side.
Stand on the paper in your normal posture for three to four seconds just as you would on the floor without any added pressure.
Use just enough pressure to get good water prints of your feet without over saturating the paper or causing water runoff or puddles.
Start over if you do not get a good water print the first time.

Results of The Wet Test


Supinator Foot Type-Very High Arch - For the severely supinated a lateral edge will not be detected. You will only see the heel and toe portions of the feet on the water print.
Pronator Foot Type-Flat-footed - Your print looks like Bigfoot's footprint or one big blob.
Neutral Foot Type- Mid Height Arch - Your water print looks like a normal foot print. The lateral edge of your water print measures between one and two inches depending on your foot width.
Prints Do Not Match- The water print of your left foot doe not match your right or vice versa. This is a common finding needing medical attention.
If you determined you are a supinator or especially if you are a pronator, consider prescription orthotics to prevent foot, ankle, knee or hip problems. These can be ordered by a licensed chiropractor or podiatrist.

With a successful Wet Test you now know your foot type and will be able to choose the right running shoe for your foot type. There are three types of running shoes, one for each foot type. The cushion shoe is for the supinator foot type. This foot type under pronates during the gait cycle causing an excessive amount of shock to the joints of the lower extremities, pelvis and spine. It is common for this foot type to experience shin splints and knee problems. The cushion shoe will help prevent these types of injuries. This shoe type tends to be very flexible and will never have a medial post as a part of its design. The motion control shoe is for the pronator foot type. It will serve to protect the foot by prevent excessive rotation of the foot during foot strike as it over-pronates. This shoe type tends to be more chunky, rigid and wider in appearance with a medial post incorporated into the design. This kind of shoe is absolutely essential for preventing injuries in the long run. At last is the stability shoe type for the neutral or normal arched foot. The stability shoe has design traits of all running shoe types. So you will find that this shoe has some cushioning along with some rigidity to reduce shock and support the natural pronation of the foot during the gait cycle.

Do not think that because you have a normal foot you can wear a tennis shoe or a low-cut basketball shoe for running. Many specialty shoe stores understand the importance of a perfect match and will allow you try multiple styles before you buy the right pair for you.
